Magic City Motor Scooters ready for business

Posted on Mar 04, 2008 in Features

Magic City Motor Scooters, owned and operated by Matthew Myers, is looking to catch Birmingham’s attention. With gas prices threatening to reach new highs, it just makes sense to look into these cool, affordable, gas friendly machines and Magic City Motor Scooters on 2nd Avenue North is the only scooter outlet in Birmingham. The very casual, very cool shop sells high quality Kymco motor scooters ranging from 50 to 500cc as well as apparel, accessories, full service and repairs and vintage restoration. “We just like things that make sense and are fun,” said Myers. His shop thrives on this motto as all customers are privilege to free coffee and wireless internet connection, making this a perfect spot for students who want to get away from campus, just chill for a while and maybe learn a little bit about scooters. “Scooters are just rad, I love everything about them.” says Myers.

Motor scooters are very prominent in Europe and have always existed as an economical motorbike. The cost of gas in most European countries is around eight dollars a gallon so scooters naturally just make a lot of sense. With gas prices in America skyrocketing, this is the perfect time to look into buying a scooter. “My gas costs about thirty dollars a month if I really push my bike hard.” said Will, Matthews’s partner from Detroit. Myers himself is originally from Maryland but spent most of his life in New York. He moved to Birmingham a few years ago, and takes great pride in the city. “I love Birmingham, it’s a fun city,” said Myers.

Myers bought the shop’s building two years ago and has been working on renovating it ever since. Myers wants to offer motor scooters to everyone at an economical price and great quality. According to Myers, these Kymco scooters can last for a long time if taken care of properly, and with friendly local service right here in the city, it won’t be hard to make that scooter pay for itself after about a year. “There is a huge market for scooters in metropolitan areas such as Birmingham and they are great for students as well.” said Myers, who loves UAB just as much as he does the city and would love for UAB students and faculty to be seen riding his scooters around campus. Students can even get a 10% discount on all purchases if they show their student ID. Myers is even looking into possible leasing agreements for students.

Myers also started the Birmingham Scooter Syndicate, which meets at 10 a.m. on Sundays at Crestwood Coffee in Crestwood to talk scooters, drink coffee, maybe tell some dirty jokes and go for a ride through the city and beyond. Myers is happy to share all of knowledge on scooters with his customers and loves to develop a relationship with each person who comes through his doors.

Magic City Motor Scooters opened in January and is already looking to be not only Birmingham’s only place for scooter enthusiasts but a great place to chill and meet new people as well. “The girls bathroom is pretty awesome too. My wife loves it.” said Myers with a laugh.
