Greek Awards honors students

The UAB 2009 Greek Awards Ceremony honoring outstanding groups and individuals in the Greek community was held Tuesday.
Hayden Swecker, coordinator of student leadership and Greek life, said she was glad UAB is able to honor both students and organizations who strive to excel.
“The purpose of these awards is to celebrate the accomplishments of the members of the Greek community,” she said.
The Dr. Scotty McCallum Alumnus of the Year award went to Stacy Gay, and Carson Talent was awarded the Sunshine Eve Hill Scholarship.
Rodney Dixon Dorand, Jr. was named Greek Man of the Year, while Kristen Johnston Chapleau, Meagan Griffin and Stephen Powell also received individual honors during the ceremony.
Riley Carpenter was named Greek Woman of the Year, Kristen Johnston Chapleau of Alpha Gamma Delta received Advisor of the Year, Meagan Griffin was awarded Outstanding New Member, and Stephen Powell was granted the Interfraternity Council Scholarship.
Alpha Omicron Pi received top honors with five award presentations including the Gina C. Willis Chapter of Character Award and the Dr. Aaron L. Lamar, Jr. Student Life Excellence Award as well as the National Pan-Hellenic Council Highest GPA and the Most Improved and Highest Overall GPA Awards.
Alpha Gama Delta received the National Pan-Hellenic Attendance Award, the Member Education Excellence Award and the Merit Award. Pi Kappa Phi was awarded the Interfraternity Council Highest GPA Award, the Intramural Award, and the Excellence in Philanthropy and Service Award.
Alpha Phi Alpha was awarded Greek Spirit and the National Pan-Hellenic Council Highest GPA for a fraternity while Delta Sigma Theta received the award for the National Pan-Hellenic Council Highest GPA for sorority.
Swecker was pleased by the hard work and participation of UAB’s Greek letter organizations. “I am excited and proud of all the accomplishments of the Greek organizations and what they stand for here at UAB,” she said.
