UA trustees approve new tuition hikes for 09-10

Staff Report – The University of Alabama trustees approved a 9.4 percent tuition hike in light of state education budget cuts.

Ivey kicking off governor campaign Wednesday

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) – The list of candidates trying to succeed Republican Bob Riley in the governor’s office will grow longer Wednesday when State Treasurer Kay Ivey kicks off her GOP campaign.

Ivey’s communications director, Mark Powell, said she will fly across the state to make announcements in Montgomery, Birmingham, Huntsville and Mobile.

SBOE to vote on 2-year chancellor requirements

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) – Should the chancellor of Alabama’s two-year college system be required to have an advanced degree, as the college presidents must? Or is executive leadership experience more important, given the system’s growing emphasis on workforce development?

The State Board of Education is torn over those questions, with some members rejecting a draft announcement for the position that requires only a bachelor’s degree, along with a minimum five years of senior-level management experience.

FEMA reversed decision on Alabama disaster help

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) – The Federal Emergency Management Agency has reversed an earlier decision and approved Alabama’s request of individual assistance for residents of Autauga, Montgomery and Elmore counties affected by recent flooding.

FEMA had earlier turned down the state’s application for help for victims of flooding from severe storms that hit the area May 6-8.

Kids to meet gay dad’s partner on Father’s Day

ATLANTA (AP) – Eric Mongerson’s kids couldn’t meet his partner of two years, much less join the couple for ice cream. His friends couldn’t cheer on the children at concerts or Little League baseball games.

He just wanted to spend a day with his kids and his partner, Jose Sanchez. This Father’s Day, on Sunday, he finally will.
