Arrest warrants issued to City Stages executives

Jefferson County District Attorney’s Worthless Check Unit has issued misdemeanor arrest warrants after weeks of investigation for some of the top City Stages officals.

Founder and president George McMillan and executive director, Denise Koch, have been found responsible for bad checks written to pay vendors and performers at this year’s festival.

The 21-year-old festival faced extreme financial difficulties this year causing the Birmingham Cultural Heritage Foundation, the charitable foundation that produced City Stages, to file Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

This was after the Birmingham City Council gave $550,000 along with a $250,000 bail out to City Stages.
No comment was given by Butch Quinn, head of the D.A.’s check unit as of press time.

The Birmingham Cultural and Heritage Foundation, Inc. issued a statement on the matter.

“Certain persons are attempting to use legal channels outside the federal bankruptcy process in an attempt to redress City Stages checks that were dishonored for insufficient funds,” the statement said.

“These and other debts of City Stages are being addressed in the pending bankruptcy proceedings involving the Birmingham Cultural & Heritage Foundation, Inc., the nonprofit foundation that issued the checks. To the extent necessary, attorneys for those who signed checks on behalf of the Foundation will respond accordingly to any allegations that may be made outside of the bankruptcy proceedings regarding any dishonored City Stages checks.”
