Schedulizer helps students organize

UAB students frustrated with the arduous task of selecting class schedules and arranging them around other activities have a little less to worry about this semester.
The university has adopted Schedulizer.com, a budding Web site that helps students organize their school, work and extracurricular activities in just a matter of seconds.
UAB is one of a handful of universities to support the site, and access is currently available to all students, just in time for spring registration.
With the Web site, users create an account and have access to a full course listing offered by their school.
They then select the courses they need to take, and the site automatically generates a weekly schedule for the student. Users are given multiple schedule combinations, allowing them to choose the line-up most suitable for them.
Students are also able to factor in personal events, allowing them to plan their schedule until their entire week — or semester — can be accounted for.
Schedulizer.com began as a student project at Cornell University in 2004, and gained popularity when students there became unsatisfied with the current software the administration was using to help students register for classes.
“When there were 20 or so things going wrong with the current program and there was a start-up that fixed those things, the students went with the start-up,” said Schedulizer CEO Jay Searson, who bought the company with a partner in 2007 and has since been offering the service to other campuses.
“We have advisers reaching out to us to help them help their students plan their schedules more efficiently,” he said.
Schedulizer.com now assists students at more than 41 universities, and Searson believes that by the time of this printing, more institutions will have been added to the roster.
The company is taking advantage of the hectic fall registration season to promote the Web site, hoping to make sure students have a little less to worry about during this busy time in their lives.
