Local restaurants designate desserts for charitable cause

What can be better than having dozens of restaurants and cafes around Birmingham serving special treats? How about filling your stomach with your favorite sweets and simultaneously contributing to the Comprehensive Cancer Center?

Last week was dubbed “Sweet on a Cure,” from Nov. 9-15. Approximately 60 businesses around Birmingham encouraged the students of UAB and citizens of Birmingham to help UAB research teams find new treatments for cancer patients by way of blatant bribery: sweets.

No matter where you were in Birmingham last week or what your sweet tooth craved, there was a participating location that had designated one dessert from their menu whose total sales went directly to the cause.

Many of the restaurants chose their signature desserts: Café Lazio chose Tiramisu, the classic Italian coffee cake, the Cajun Steamer’s “bread puddin’,” while the Irondale Café allowed not only one, but all of their desserts to qualify for “Sweet Week.”

The UAB cancer research center may be among the top ranking in the country, but that doesn’t mean that they have infinite funds.

The Comprehensive Cancer Center offers support groups for patients as well as extensive research on all types of cancer: from brain to breast and oral to ovary.

During last week, you didn’t have to be a scientist to help find a cure for a range of diseases that claim the lives of millions of people every year.

So, for those of you who missed out on this week of treats, look out next year for the “Sweet on a Cure” logo around Birmingham and do yourself and the Cancer Center a favor by succumbing to the will of your sweet tooth.
