Tennis triumphs in T-town Petrich and Cornei face off in finals

The men’s tennis team put forth an impressive performance in Tuscaloosa at the Crimson Tide Fall Invitational.
Lost in the shuffle of UAB’s football turnaround and the opening of the Blazer basketball season, the Blazers wrapped up their final tournament of the fall season with a good showing that saw the Blazers go 13-6 in singles competition.
The most successful draw for the Blazers was the Stabler division where seniors Thomas Petrich and Dan Cornei ran through the field to meet in an all-UAB final.
Petrich defeated Cornei in three sets 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 to take the final.
“It is not easy to play a teammate and good friend,” said Petrich.
“It is hard to focus on the match and forget about your friendship; however, we managed to focus on tennis and had a really competitive match.”
Petrich’s two sets were the first two sets Cornei had dropped all tournament.
Cornei breezed through to reach the finals by three straight-set victories against Southern Miss’ Markus Wessinghage, Georgia Southern’s Mark Paetz and Memphis’ David Henry.
Petrich dropped only one set to Vanderbilt’s Scott Lieberman en route to a tournament final birth.
The Crimson Tide Fall Invitational marks Petrich’s last fall tournament in his college career, but he sees only a better opportunity for his teammate next year in Tuscaloosa.
“It was my last fall tournament, so I tried to finish my last fall with a positive result and I am happy it worked out,” said Petrich.
“Dan [Cornei] has one more fall to play, so I hope he can get the trophy next year.”
Petrich and Cornei were not the only Blazers in action.
Senior Alex Emery and sophomore Daniel Moser both reached the semifinal round in their respective draws before each falling in straight sets.
Moser would reach the semifinal of the Crimson division in doubles with teammate Tyrone Ewels.
Sophomore Danny Manlow went 1-1 in both singles and doubles action and John Hollimon added to the Blazers’ mark with a 1-1 singles record.
