Posted on Feb 09, 2010 in Sports

This week in sports features a to-do list of bringing back into action spring sports, the increased anxiety of the Cardiac Blazers, and the return of sports’ winter glory, the Winter Olympics.

The men’s and women’s basketball teams will return home to Bartow Arena after their respective road stints, where both teams suffered losses to rival Memphis. The men will be in action Saturday night against Marshall, who will be looking to return the favor that UAB paid them earlier this season.

Freshman Jala Harris and the women’s team will host a pair of games this weekend. On Friday night, they will play host to UCF and Sunday host the Golden Eagles of Southern Miss. The Lady Blazers should come out on top from these games, as both UCF and Southern Miss are ranked below UAB in conference standings.

The men’s and women’s tennis teams will both be hosting Kennesaw State for Friday afternoon match-ups. The men and women both are looking to continue their successes on the court from last week. The men will host New Orleans Saturday afternoon at 2, while the women will take on Charlotte earlier Saturday morning.

The women’s rifle team will be competing in Alaska this weekend, to wrap up their shooting season for the year.
The softball team will open up spring sports action by traveling to Starkville, Miss., to take part in the Mississippi State Bulldog Classic. They begin competition with Mississippi State on Friday and take on North Texas and Stephen F. Austin on Saturday.

The track and field team will move closer to Conference USA indoor Championships as they head up to Clemson, S.C., for the Tiger Paw Invitational. Then in two weeks, travel to Houston, Texas, for championships.

And in sports events outside of Birmingham, the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver will begin Friday night with opening ceremonies beginning at 7 p.m. Ninety countries from around the globe will take the walk that athlete’s dream about. The competitions begin Saturday with events ranging from alpine skiing to speed skating will commence. The more popular events like figure skating will begin on Monday.

Also always a big surprise to be seen in the sports world, the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show’s coverage will begin Monday night, where the best of the best in all breeds will compete for the ultimate title of best in show.

On Monday night, the hound, toy, non-sporting and herding breeds will compete, and on Tuesday night, the working, sporting and terrier groups will perform. Tuesday night, the best in show competition will take place following the completion of the breed competitions.

And in not so sporting news, perhaps the winner of Super Bowl XLIV (44) will enjoy at trip to Disney World, to celebrate becoming the World Champs. Due to print release, the official winner could not be clarified.
