USGA VP Q&A

Steven M. Coyle
Senator for the College of Arts & Sciences
Why are you running for USGA VP?
After being highly involved in USGA, I learned exactly to what extent the USGA can do for the students. Knowing that I can make a difference is what motivated me to run. I have a passion for USGA, always have, and I want to take my drive into the executive office.
How long have you been involved in USGA activities?
I have been in involved for a year. In this single year I have been a senator, vice-chair to the Senate, vice-chair to the Services Committee and Travel Grants Committee. I just recently joined the STARS, which handles Higher Ed Day, which is March 4, and we would love for any students that can attend to join us on the trip down to Montgomery.
What is the focus of your campaign for VP?
My focus, first and foremost, is the students. I want to give them a voice that I feel lacks here at UAB. Yes, we represent the student, but unless we find a way to communicate with our constituents, better nothing will ever get achieved. Of course I have a various issues that I want to see resolved but I want to hear from the students. That’s why the Student Forum is so important, and I hope all students can attend it, Thursday, Feb. 11 at 12:30 p.m. in the Blazer RLC.
Why should students vote for you on election day?
Students should for vote me because, unlike my opponents, I’m for all students. I’m not seeking this position because I can, I’m seeking to actually make a difference. I feel, a lot of individuals run for the wrong reasons, and I just want the students to know that my candidacy is strictly to serve them, not just one interest group or one organization.
What is the biggest issue on campus in 2010?
The biggest issue on campus is parking and housing combined. UAB is growing at a rapid pace, but the parking and housing isn’t keeping up. I will never promise a solution because no one can guarantee that, but I will promise answers for students. I feel like students have hundreds of questions about certain things and I want those questions to be answered. I will fight hard for change and even harder for answers to why some things are not being changed.

Chief of Staff, Office of the President
Why are you running for USGA VP?
Before serving in the USGA, I attended several USGA events and activities and this past year I have served as an officer within the USGA. I have really enjoyed serving in the USGA and would like to continually serve in the coming academic year. In my previous experience with the USGA, I have been a strong advocate for the undergraduate student body and I thought that running for the USGA vice presidency would be a great way that I can serve the students in the coming year.
How long have you been involved in USGA activities?
I have been involved with the USGA for this entire academic year. I am a former senator for the School of Education within the USGA Senate, and I am currently serving as the chief of staff and travel grant coordinator on the Executive Cabinet.
What is the focus of your campaign for VP?
Students are my number one focus for my campaign. I have worked very hard within the Senate previously to put students first before special interests. I will work hard with the USGA President and Senate to expand student services, investigate ways to lower student expenses, strengthen relationships with student organizations, investigate ways towards creating Greek housing, and work hard towards making UAB more eco-friendly.
Why should students vote for you on election day?
I believe that students should vote for me because I am the most qualified person for the job. I am the only candidate running in the race that has presented legislation that was passed by the Senate that expands student services. I am a skilled parliamentarian and am very experienced with running effective and efficient meetings, and the USGA vice president must possess those qualities as they preside over the Senate. If elected, I promise to keep students first in the business of the Senate.
What is the biggest issue on campus in 2010?
Aside from parking, which is a huge concern on campus and an issue I will work with the USGA President and UAB administration to alleviate, I believe that UAB can expand more student services to the student body. Currently, USGA President Hernandez Stroud is working towards bringing a textbook rental program to UAB through Barnes & Noble. This coupled with other innovative ways to expand student services should be a prevalent issue that the USGA should work towards in 2010.
