Birmingham Fire and Rescue responded to a two-alarm fire at 1029 First Ave. N. at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, March 5. Black smoke billowed from the old tire warehouse as firefighters battled the blaze from First Avenue and from the I-65 overpass, shutting down the interstate.

“The cause of the fire is still under investigation,” said Battalion Chief C.W. Mardis, who on the scene.
Police had asked vagrants to leave the building Thursday.

“We have no injuries to report right now,” said Mardis, but he feared there may have been vagrants inside.
Mardis indicated that firefighters would be rotating duties throughout the night to be sure the fire did not erupt again from hot pockets left after the fire was out.
