Softball downed by Tide

Last Tuesday, the UAB Women’s softball team dropped their home opener against the No. 8 nationally ranked Alabama Crimson Tide, 7-3.

The game was one where neither team played to their potential by any means. The game went on for three innings without a hit into the green. Alabama did muster one unearned run in the top of the second inning, but not until senior UAB outfielder Martina Landrum singled up the middle, did a ball leave the infield for either team.

Then, after a fielding error by the Tide, in which Caley Walden was able to reach base, third baseman Cameron Skates belted a homerun down the left field line, to put UAB up 3-1. Skates was 1-for-3 at the plate, posting three RBI.
Unfortunately for the Blazers, they could not hold on to the lead beyond the fifth inning, where after two costly errors, as well as singles by Alabama’s senior third baseman Alex Blewitt, freshman infielder Courtney Conley and a double by Tide sophomore outfielder Jennifer Fenton, Alabama would reclaim the lead, scoring four runs, making it a 5-3 ball game.

Alabama pitcher Kelsi Dunne would ice the UAB batters for the rest of the game, striking out a total of 17 hitters on the night and not allowing any hits for the rest of the game. Blazer pitcher Alisha Smith was unable to with stand the notably potent Alabama offense, as they would post two more runs on the board in the top of the sixth, virtually putting the game out of reach at 7-3.

UAB’s effort proved to be short lived on the night, in front of an all time record attendance.

“I really appreciate our fans coming out tonight,” said head coach Marla Townsend. “The fan support created a great environment for this special evening. I really regret not being able to take advantage of this opportunity against Alabama.”
