DiLorenzo dishes on life as dean

Posted on Jul 26, 2010 in News

Dr. Thomas DiLorenzo began his tenure as UAB’s first dean of College of Arts and Sciences on July 1, 2010.

After the official announcement by Provost Eli Capilouto last month, DiLorenzo has spent his time transitioning from Delaware to Alabama.

“I am enjoying exploring the area and experiencing the joys of living here,” said DiLorenzo.

“The thing that drew me to UAB was the creation of this new College of Arts and Sciences. By all of the departments being in one college, it will open up tremendous multi-disciplinary opportunities for students.”

DiLorenzo was proud that UAB has been lauded publicly by many prestigious groups, including the Carnegie Foundation and The Princeton Review, which ranks UAB in the top 15 percent of universities and colleges in the U.S.
“What really makes UAB a first-rate institution is its focus on excellence in academics and partnerships with the community. UAB is the ideal balance of innovation and tradition,” DiLorenzo said.

“Students and faculty here have come together across disciplines, divisions and traditional boundaries to create a university that is truly 21st century.”

DiLorenzo’s disciplinary training has been very data-oriented. He feels comfortable with budgets and fiscal affairs.
“My job is to strengthen our academic programs, enhance multi-cultural education, create and grow research activities and find even better ways to approach interdisciplinary research and teaching,” he said.

DiLorenzo strives to help the university continue to break new ground, to be bold in pushing forward and to inspire others to be bold as well.

“We have entered the age of the global marketplace and I want to push the College of Arts and Sciences to the highest limits of what is possible, to ensure the success of all students, now and in the future,” said DiLorenzo.
“Students are what make a university,” said DiLorenzo.

“When students are dissatisfied, I want to know why.”

Although DiLorenzo has been on campus just a few weeks, he is already meeting with various faculty members and staff to determine if there are any issues that need to be addressed immediately.

“I am here to focus on any problems in the coming weeks and months and resolve them, so students can focus on their studies,” DiLorenzo said.

DiLorenzo’s goal is to strive for excellence and collaboration in academics, and promises to guide students to achieve success and prepare them for a lifetime of continuous learning.

“I’ve already been in contact with the USGA senator from the College of Arts and Sciences and we made plans to meet very soon.”

In his short time here, DiLorenzo has attended the UAB Summer Band Fourth of July concert, experienced “Jazz in the Park” at Caldwell Park, visited the Pepper Place Farmer’s Market, traveled to Montgomery for a series of meetings, and waited to buy a car until he arrived in Alabama.

“I anticipate discovering many more of the wonderful qualities that Birmingham and Alabama have to offer,” said DiLorenzo.
