A new look for volleyball

The volleyball team started their season off this past weekend with a tournament in Atlanta, Ga. at Georgia Tech University.
In their three matches, they defeated Alabama A&M but lost to both Indiana and Georgia Tech. playing in this early tournament was a good way to open the season; it gave the volleyball team a better feel for where they stand this fall, and what they need to improve on.
The team has a somewhat “new look” this year, with four freshmen and four transfers. According to Head Coach Kerry Messersmith, “We have some really high-quality newcomers. I think they have all done a good job in transitioning into the college game.”
Messersmith also stated “All the newcomers have really good chemistry, and the girls who were already here have done a really good job in welcoming them, helping them, and making all the newcomers feel at home.”
With so many newcomers, (eight to be exact), Coach Messersmith wanted to make sure these girls all got along, so during the offseason the UAB volleyball team took a road trip to camp Chandler. The team had a lot of fun participating in a number of team building exercises, one of which was a ropes course.
The team is also experiencing a new look this year, with a change to the Conference USA and how their season will play out. This will be the first year the conference does not have a tournament at the season’s end, but instead will crown champion to whichever team wins the season.
Senior Jordan McDonald said “We want to win a conference championship, no doubt in our minds that we want to win it, but with no tournament at the end of this year, we are going to have to play hard every game and hit it full force.”
A new look to the C-USA, along with a new energetic look to the UAB volleyball team, has these girls, their coaches, and their fans pretty excited about what could be a very promising year for the Blazers.
The team will play again this Friday in Tuscaloosa, as the University of Alabama is set to host the Bama Bash volleyball tournament. They are slated for two games on Friday against Furman at 10:00a.m. and Toledo at 5:00p.m.
They will also have a game Sunday against state rival and host team Alabama at 1:00p.m.
