Four fall tips for students

What newcomers need to know about enjoying the crisp Alabama fall season

Another successful summer is in our rear-view mirror. Fall can be felt lingering in the air. Many UAB students are new to the area and simply do not know what a beautiful Alabama fall has in store for them. There are many reasons to look forward to the upcoming season. Here is your quick guide to fall back on.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS
Alabama is known for its hot, humid, and muggy summers. Fall is the best time to enjoy what the outdoors has to offer. Some days may be warm enough for a dip in the pool, while some nights will inspire you to enjoy cooking over a warm camp fire. Get out there and fish, jog, bike, toss, ride, shoot, jump, hunt, build and climb. And remember, making time for that special picnic can be an absolute pleasure under the shade of an Alabama Oak.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, LET’S GET READY TO RUMBLE
Arguing about politics and religion will create an uproar in most areas around the country. For this state, you can add college football to that list. Any sports junkie will tell you: fall is the best time to be a fan. In Alabama, NCAA football is the king. Blazers, Tigers and Tide make for action packed Saturdays throughout the state. Don’t expect to be able to hide from the fandom.

However, football isn’t the only sport to be excited about this year. In addition to the 2010 NFL season, October brings sporting fans the heart of the MLB playoffs, NASCAR at Talladega Superspeedway, and the kickoff of the most hyped NBA season in recent memory.

TURKEY AND DRESSING-UP
Two of the biggest holidays are on their way to frighten and fill.

While some students may still choose to trick or treat, others may want to enjoy some of our acclaimed haunted attractions, including Sloss Fright Furnace and Atrox Factory. And with a slew of horror films hitting theaters this fall, there is always a way to get your fear fill. Halloween brings out the creativity in everyone.

Thanksgiving is no joke in Alabama. We take it very seriously. Some people would risk burning their entire property to the ground for that perfectly cooked turkey. And don’t forget the dressing or sides of baked beans, potato salad, sweet corn, cranberry sauce and yams. Just when you think you’re completely full and can no longer gobble down anything else, dessert arrives. Pies, cakes and cobblers cannot be denied in this November tradition of making ourselves joyously miserable.

FASHION-PASSION
Go ahead and grab some new kicks to start things off on the right foot. There is no doubting that the most accessible wardrobe options can be found in the fall months. Your closet will be in full use throughout the season. Whether it’s that pair of shorts you want to wear for one last time this calendar year or your favorite light jacket making it’s way back into the rotation, fall is the true time to show off your style.
