Local DJs smatter the Splatter Party with energetic tunage

Posted on Aug 30, 2010 in Features

The second annual Mad Splatter Dance Party, inspired by the popular “Day Glow Party,” the event, which was free to students, featured popular local DJs Nastique and CoCo, who remix music monthly at “Kids Got the Disco” and “Solid Gold.” More heavily advertised than last year, this year’s “Splatter Party” was also, according to some students, more heavily populated.

Unlike “KGTD” and “Solid Gold,” however, future attendants of the “Mad Splatter Party” actually need to be punctual to the event to partake in the main appeal: covering your friends with paint. After the first half hour, most, if not all, of the paint provided covered the students, ground, and tarps, leaving none for the barely-latecomers. Many students, who were previously thrilled about the event, missed the fun of dirtying their friends and themselves. Sophomore Katy Harris proclaimed that the event was “full of energy” and “was a great social event for those who live on and around campus… but maybe not if you don’t [because if you’re not on time, there won’t be paint].”

For those who follow the careers of the featured DJs and were hoping for their usual techno and pop remixes, the “Splatter Party” was a bit surprising since most of the music was newer and more mainstream, though not necessarily good, rap music. Nastique and CoCo, though, seemed to smartly cater to their audience, most of whom seemed to enjoy themselves through the three hour event. It seemed very few people who ended the party, however, started it since their clothes were devoid of paint.

Although the event was fun while the paint lasted, what was almost more amusing was observing the students the following day that had failed to completely wash the paint from their hair and skin. The “Splatter Party” was sponsored by the UPC Films and Novelties Committee. For more upcoming events, check out the UAB event calendars on www.insideuab.com
