Paint palooza on Blount Quad; Mad Splatter Party kicks off fall semester

Posted on Aug 30, 2010 in News

Last Wednesday night, over 200 students flocked to the Rast-Blount quad to enjoy an evening of dancing and paint splattering at the Mad Splatter Dance Party.

“This event was planned for students to come out and have a good time and meet new people,” said Tori Jones from the Office of Student Involvement. “The Mad Splatter Dance Party was part of the UAB welcome week for students.”
Sheets of plastic laying on the quad marked the designated area for the paint splattering.

Paint flew through the air as DJ Coco and special guest DJ Nastique provided the beat that kept the party alive.
Gallons of red, yellow, blue and green paint were poured into trays and passed around.

Several different methods were used in the paint application process. Many participants used the handprint method, which involved coating their hands in paint and plastering them to an unsuspecting friend’s t-shirt.

Other less conservative methods included pouring an abundance of paint on people, as well as throwing globs of paint in random directions.

While dancing with the group, some people elected to sprinkle paint over the crowd, adding splashes of color not only to peoples clothing but to their hair and face as well.

Many students felt that this was a good, safe way to have fun while becoming acclimated to college life.

“I’ve always wondered what my first ‘college party’ would be like, and it was actually a really fun experience,” said freshman Destiny Rice.

“After a stressful first week of classes, it was a great way to unwind and just have a little fun.”

This was not the first time that students have walked away from the quad with their free white t-shirts streaked with a multitude of different colors. The first Mad Splatter Dance Party took place on April 1.

“I thought that the party was a cool way for both new and old students to interact with each other,” said Sophomore Alexandria Sheppard.

“Events like this make everyone feel a little more relaxed when getting used to a new environment. It’s also a great way to end up with an awesome, colorful t-shirt!”

The concept of using paint to decorate the body has been around for thousands of years. UAB has incorporated this age old idea on campus to create its own unique event intended for welcoming students to their new Alma Mater.

The event was sponsored by the Films and Novelties Committee.
