Student life day a success

It was not a holiday, but Thursday, August 26 was still a day for celebration.
Student Life Day brought music from BlazeRadio, barbecue from Jim ‘N Nicks, veggie burgers from Locos, and over 160 student organizations out on the green to commemorate life at UAB.
Things could not get better as organizations such as the brand new Transfer Student Organization(TSO), Anime Club, and the Spanish and Latino Student Association (SALSA) got together to rejoice about student life with food, give-aways, and an abundance of freshmen enthusiasm. The campus recycling center was also present, making sure the Campus Green remained green.
According to Debora Morgette, Coordinator of Judicial Affairs for Student Life, all staff in the department helped with this one event. “They are putting on the show,” she said.
Last year, 1,200 students, staff and faculty attended Student Life Day. Student Life is a group composed of 35 people engaged in making everyday life on campus more enjoyable and proactive.
Jason Meier, the Assistant Director of Student Involvement, believes that not only is Student Life a day to celebrate, it is also an opportunity to make students get involved.
“Hopefully we’ll run out of food. It means it’s a good turn-out of students,” said Meier.
Music, free food, and a beautiful day on the green attracted not only freshmen but upperclassmen as well, and even graduate students decided to stop and check out the festivities.
Graduate student Yih Tsao has been involved with student life throughout his college career. After winning the Campus Commitment Award, serving as an international mentor, holding office on Campus Outreach, earning a spot on the Dean’s List last Spring, holding a resident assistant position in student housing, and several other achievements and positions, he attended Student Life Day of 2010-2011 as a graduate student.
“They did a great job providing a diverse event,” Tsao said. “I’m glad this day facilitates that [diversity], making sure UAB provides the best college experience we can get.”
Andrew J. Marsch, Assistant Vice-President for Student Life, said while serving barbecue that this is a day for students to become more familiar with what happens on campus.
The event is held during the first weeks of class so that freshmen, especially, have a chance to start making decisions about how they will be involved in student life.
Stacye Fraser from the World Students Association thinks Student Life Day offers a wide variety of options regarding student representation.
“Today they have the opportunity to learn what UAB has to offer”.
