Vulcan Performers sock it to Valentine’s Day with their “Anti-Valentine’s” show

Valentine’s Day is stereotypically a time of candy hearts, red roses, and restaurant reservations. However, the stage of the Vulcan Performer’s fourth annual “Anti-Valentine’s Day” show was littered with black and red signs proclaiming “Stupid Cupid,” “I Hate You,” and “Alone 4 Life.” Ten performers and several special guests danced nearly twenty numbers at the Alabama Theater’s Hill Center, revealing the gloomier side of Valentine’s Day.
What started as an experiment in the creator’s basement has evolved into a tradition for the dancers and those who enjoy their performances. The show drew a larger crowd than expected, leaving some spectators standing at the back of the room. But despite the lack of adequate seating, the audience was incredibly enthusiastic and supportive of the performers.
The show also featured the “Birmingham Beach Shaggers,” a dance team of seniors that travel around the south performing and watching other “Shaggers” perform.
Also among the guest performers was “Drake Irish,” a river dancing duo, and the hip-hop pair “Fy Swagga.” However, the crowd favorite was probably Jaimee Simon and Stephen Olson, professional ballroom dancers from Nashville who braved the terrible winter weather of the week to perform. If Olson and Simon were not the crowd favorites, they were only outdone by “Brooks’ Junior Cypher,” a group of several soon to be B-Boys, ages four to twelve.
The Anti-Valentine’s show has been a running tradition for the Performers for four years straight. It’s proven to be such a hit that the Alabama Ballet took cues from them and hosted their own Anti-Valentine’s after-party for the performance of “Giselle.” Although the Performers aren’t necessarily fond of the fact that their idea was copied, it goes to show the great amount of creativity and ingenuity that the Vulcan Perfomers display with their shows.
Aside from special performances, including the “Anti-Valentine’s Day” performance, the Vulcan Performers also sponsor social dances at the Rhythm N Motion Studio.
The dancers are also available for party bookings, adult or children, at their studio or a location of your choice. Similarly, they are available for choreography for parties, weddings, or talent shows. For more information on the dancers, performances, or social dances, visit www.bhamdance.com.
