CRCT hears students’ suggestions

UAB students have been heard.
Following the redesign of the Campus Recreation Center, many students were unhappy with the changes. These changes led to the creation of the wewantourrecback.org Web site by Hector “Dominic” DeSimon, a UAB alumni.
On June 20, the CRCT fired back with “We hear you!” a campaign designed to reinforce their commitment to students and members.
In conjunction with the campaign, the CRCT developed assessments from members’ comments to make sure they are reaching everyone. They also reconfigured the main weight room floor layout, convened two advisory groups of students and members, and doubled their cleaning cycle.
DeSimon said the management at the CRCT — particularly that of Bob Holub, assistant director of facilities — has shown interest in addressing the concerns and complaints against the new layout.
“In fact, some of the modifications made in the weight room over the past week were some I (and others) had recommended,” DeSimon said.
While he doesn’t think the CRCT is perfect, DeSimon said he believes the administration is “working towards accommodating patrons’ needs and wants as much as possible.”
The renovations were a directive from the Vice-Provost’s office, according to DeSimon.
“Their hands are somewhat tied because they are only allowed so much leeway,” he said.
DeSimon said he finds several positive changes the new management has made such as fixing broken equipment quickly and working towards making the overall experience more efficient and patron friendly.
“They are open to new ideas (whether they come from an employee or a patron),” DeSimon said.
