Congratulations! USGA Election Results
Posted on Feb 26, 2013 in News
Andrew Hayes was elected as the 2013-2014 president for the UAB’s Undergraduate Student Government Association (USGA). Ali Massoud was voted Vice President.
1,262 undergraduates voted in the general election on Feb. 19-20. The run-off election will be held February 26-27.
The new USGA staff will be inaugurated on the first day of summer classes, as ordered by the USGA Constitution and Code of Laws.
“I hope everyone is ready for an exciting and productive year for USGA. I’m ready to see this campus grow and fit the mold of one of the premiere institutions of the southeast,” said Hayes.
Hayes’ campaign consisted of face-to-face interaction, a Facebook event, and even a viral picture of the candidate holding a kitten.
“I believe it’s easier to convey the passion you have for something if you speak to people in person,” said Hayes,“That’s what I focused a lot of my campaign on.”
Hayes is currently the Attorney General for USGA. He has also served as a USGA Senator-at-Large for Parking and Housing & Finance Committee Chairman.
The newly-elected president acknowledges that it’s easy to come in with “a slab of ideas,” but realizes that “it’s important to focus on a lot of small things and deliver them out.”
One idea that Hayes has for his term as president is to form committees of students that focus on topics such as housing, dining, and parking.
In March, Hayes will appoint his Executive Cabinet that consists of all standing committee chairpersons, and additional President-appointed members with the consent of a two-thirds vote in Senate.
A revised USGA Constitution and Code of Laws was also passed in the general election. 1,089 voted “yes” to the revisions, 89 voted “no,” and 84 abstained from voting.
The new USGA Constitution will be initiated on the first day of summer classes.
