Blazer went back to Regions field for the weekend after posting a win in Montgomery over Alabama State.

UAB took action in their first C-USA matchup of the year.  The first game didn’t go as planned.  Chase Mallard delivered another dominant performance on the mound. Through eight innings the score was even at two runs apiece.

The top of the ninth was problematic for the home team, a walk, balk and two wild pitches combined with a hit allowed two Blue Raiders to cross the plate resulting in a two run deficit for the Green and Gold.

A walk and a hit put the Blazers down just one before suffering the final out end what was the third loss of the season for UAB putting them 0-1 in C-USA. “A normal Friday night game,” head coach Brian Shoop said in an interview with “Runs are at a premium. A pitcher’s duel, each teams had a couple of chances. The kids made a good run at it in the ninth. We came up a little short tonight.”

Saturdays game started like Fridays ended, with UAB struggling.  After an inning and a third starter Johnny Leiske gave up an early run and earned a quick exit from the diamond.  In relief came Thomas Lowery.  Lowery pitched four innings allowed two ER and picked up his first win.

The fifth frame UAB offense woke up tallying five runs to spring the Green and Gold ahead.  UAB would hold on the lead after a ninth inning scare pulling the series against MTSU even.

In the rubber match, Junior pitcher Alex Luna would shine.  Luna pitched 8 scoreless innings allowing just 4 hits en route to his 3 win and his record remains without a blemish.

“It was a dominant outing,” commented Shoop. “All four missed barrels and they squibbed ground balls in the right spots. That was a dominant performance. Today, basically we win because of Alex Luna.”

UAB scored 2 runs in the third inning on a pair of RBI singles by Ivan De Jesus and Ryan Prinzing.  The two runs would be all UAB needed as they held the Blue Raiders at bay winning 2-0.

“It was great to comeback after losing on Friday to win the series,” coach Shoop said. “But, I do not want to make any more of it than what it is.”

UAB wins the opening series in C-USA action as they improve to 13-3 on the year and 2-1 in C-USA.

The Blazers will now have a home and home against JSU with the first game coming inside the diamond at Regions on Tuesday before heading to Jacksonville Wednesday.

After the bout with the instate foe, UAB will head to Norfolk, Virginia where they will enter the second series inside of league play against Old Dominion.

Over Spring Break, the Blazers will head to Honolulu to take on Hawaii in a four game series.
