‘Giants’ visit south; NYC fan-favorite rocks out in Atlanta

They Might Be Giants: they’re the well read, hilarious songwriting geniuses of the musical world for the past 26 years. And recently, they were kind enough to play not one but two nights in Atlanta, and to make that even better, one show was a Lincoln show.
TMBG is currently on tour in support of their newest album Join Us, released last summer. But to spice things up, they are also playing as many songs as they can remember from 1988’s Lincoln. I was lucky enough to attend both s… Read More

Blazeradio’s DJ Lady Danger takes on Artopia

Don’t let her radio persona fool you. Not only is she a spit-fire, Christina Daniel is also a very bright and talented student at UAB.
On BlazeRadio, Daniel is DJ Lady Danger, bringing listeners a mix of indie rock and punk music since her sophomore year every Friday from 1:30-3:00 p.m.
“I was originally drawn to BlazeRadio because of the freedom I saw that DJs had with their shows, and how it could be used to expose UAB’s student body and others to local art and music,” she… Read More

Love and empathy for Whitney Houston

As an icy wind sliced the air outside the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, N.J., Donna Thorn stuffed another bouquet of flowers between the iron bars of the church gate.
On the surface, Thorn, a short woman in sweatpants and a wool cap, didn’t appear to have much in common with Whitney Houston, who as a child sang gospel in the red brick church. On Saturday, Houston was found dead in a Beverly Hills hotel room. Thorn’s eyes filled with tears and her voice shook as she described… Read More

Jams from the ‘Ham…

When I asked Tink Edwards if Blame Sydney is the only ska band in Alabama, he told me no. “We’ve had many shows with similar artists, such as Shut Up Travis and the Andies, with a ton of others,” he said. While those bands might very well be great, Auburn’s Blame Sydney is the focus for this week, not because they’re the only band I know of from that short list, but because they are high energy awesome.
Blame Sydney formed three years ago when founding members Luke Sheehan (… Read More

Glee season three keeps fans singing its praises

All GLEEKS raise your slushies high and proud! If you haven’t seen or heard of Glee, where have you been the last three years? Glee has become such a pop culture phenomenon that it’s hard to believe they haven’t been around longer.
Okay, so the show is not the best thing to happen to the world since unlimited text messaging, but it’s still really good. The characters on the show have definitely grown, but not much has changed on Glee. The humor, the style and all the thing… Read More

Happy Valentine’s Day, even if you’re single

Valentine’s Day is a holiday that you either love or hate, and it’s usually dependent on your relationship status.
If you’re single, February 14 is the one day of the year when your eyes will burn with all of the pink and red hearts and the lace doilies that belong in a nursing home. It’s also normal to feel the need to vomit after seeing the couple making out in a corner booth at a restaurant.
If you’re single, Valentine’s Day is a 24-hour period when you’re convinced… Read More

Jaime’s quotes worth quoting

Ok, I admit it, I’m guilty of watching (and enjoying) romantic comedies, reading Nicholas Sparks novels, and occasionally feeling sorry for myself with a pint of Ben and Jerry’s. Here are a couple of quotes that have helped me get through different situations in love. I promise, nothing will be as sappy as Nicholas Sparks.
“Everything that I understand, I understand only because I love.”
-Leo Tolstoy
Ok, I’m all for independence, but you know you’ve feigned an i… Read More
