Dondria Duets III: The 90’s Edition does justice to the decade

So So Def princess Dondria is trying her hand at one of the most beloved eras of music: none other than the fresh-as-ever 90’s. “Dondria Duets III: The 90’s Edition” was released on February 1 and covers a variety of 90’s hits.
The 10 tracks are solely songs done by males, which is an interesting choice considering all the females with hits in that time period. Nonetheless, the 25-year-old picked some classics to add her vocals to.
The mix-tape begins with an intro nar… Read More

24-hours of giving

“One day. One massive opportunity to support nonprofits.” So states the banner of the official website for Alabama Gives Day. On February 2, 2012, the Alabama Association of Nonprofits, along with the Alabama Broadcasters Association and the Razoo Foundation, yoked the power of statewide individual contributions to connect new and existing donors with thousands of Alabama nonprofits. Their mission is “to unite nonprofits for a stronger Alabama by strengtheni… Read More

Daniel Radcliffe is back in ‘Black’

It’s a tricky business, segueing from a successful franchise to a bona fide film career. Many have tried with varying degrees of success, but in the end, it all comes down to money. No matter how beloved the character may be, in Hollywood, you’re only as good as your last movie.
Daniel Radcliffe is a perfect example of an actor trying to make that transition. Smartly honing his chops on Broadway in productions like “Equus” and “How to Succeed in Business Without Reall… Read More

This hashtag has been recently trending on Twitter, so I figured I’d set the record straight and confront the awkward moments head-on so you’ll know exactly what to do should an “awkward moment” arise.
#ThatAwkwardMomentWhen…You are at a party and are talking to a person you’ve met before…but you can’t remember their name.
How to deal: When one of your friends walks by, introduce them to the person who’s name you can’t remember. Most likely, t

Workplay is, and has been for a few years, one of Birmingham’s most popular music clubs, housing well-known acts such as Neko Case, Tegan and Sara, The Ting Tings, and Eric Hutchinson. This semester Workplay will feature more shows that will, without a doubt, sell out to a diverse audience.
On January 13, The Farewell Drifters will be performing at 8:00. Tickets are relatively cheap to go see this up-and-coming band: $12.00 in advance and $15.00 the day of the show.

Don’t jump to conclusions

‘Man on a Ledge’ succeeds in scripted suicide
As a movie reviewer, I take my job fairly seriously, at least enough so that I try to steadfastly avoid other critics’ reviews lest they affect my own interpretation of the film at hand.
Sometimes, however, some criticism filters through, like it or not, typically from friends.
“You’ve got to see that this week? My condolences. The reviews are terrible.”
Thanks a lot, people.
Such was the case as we filed into “Man on… Read More

Apple’s new virtual assistant and the future of artificial intelligence
Okay, I admit it. I finally gave in to my inner Apple fan this past winter break and convinced my parents to get me one of those shiny, metallic electronic toys otherwise known as an iPhone. When the first iPhone came out, I was skeptical. All touch-screen interface, you say? Ha! I assumed Apple was inexplicably foolish in designing this fragile creature. I never thought people would actually buy into t… Read More

Shades of nail polish

Let me tell you all about my most recent discovery in the world of nail polish…
For Christmas, my cousin gave me two bottles of nail polish, one white and one blue. My nails were bare, so I put on the stuff. But when it dried, it looked cracked.
I thought maybe it was just cheap stuff, but it was Sephora brand by OPI so no, that couldn’t have been it. I showed my nails to my cousin, and she told me the polish was supposed to do that.
“It’s cracking nail polish,” she said.
Crac… Read More

The girl with the tweety bird tattoo

When you think of tattoos, what’s the first thought that comes to your mind? Is it a big rugged biker who has mom written inside a barbed-wire heart?
Do you think of a drunken lower back Tweety Bird mishap?
Or do you think of something sentimental?
I used to think that tattoos were only meant for the Lil Waynes of this world. Growing up at a south Florida country club, I rarely saw them.
Go to South Beach on the other hand and… well, you get the picture.
You always hear horror st… Read More

“I was born gay. I wasn’t born a democrat,” Dan Choi proclaimed to an enthusiastic and enthralled audience of UAB students last Thursday.
Choi publically announced his homosexuality in 2009 on “The Rachel Maddow Show” before being discharged for violating the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. After failing to appeal his case to the federal court, Choi has become a human rights activist, traveling and
