Softball travels to the midwest with mixed results

The UAB softball team headed out to the desert on Friday for the first day of the Hillenbrand Invitational. The team split a pair of games on the first day, defeating Southern Utah, 2-0, before falling to host No. 16 Arizona, 7-0.

Lady Blazers hold SMU 50-46 in the final minutes for a home win

The Lady Blazers of the hardwood held SMU without a field goal for the final nine minutes Thursday night with a 50-46 win at Bartow Arena. UAB junior guard Khalilah Watson was a big part of the win with five assists for the Blazers.

‘I’m excited to be playing basketball’; Squeaky Johnson moving on after cut

After a one year warm up at Salt Lake Community College, the UAB Blazers welcomed a new 5’10” point guard, Carldell “Squeaky” Johnson.
Squeaky became one of the Blazers’ greatest players. During his first year at UAB, he made a statement starting in 22 out of 32 games that season. That same year he led the nation in an assist-to-turnover ratio. He averaged 3.83 assists for every turnover. He averaged 4.8 points, 1.8 rebounds, and a team-leading 4.3 assists per game…. Cameron Moore Slams home his third career Player of the Week award

For the second time this season, UAB senior forward Cameron Moore has been selected as the Conference USA Player of the Week. This is the second time this season he has received this honor.
Moore earns the recognition after leading UAB to a pair of wins over Houston and at UTEP. During the week, Moore collected a pair of double-doubles and averaged 18.0 points, 12.0 rebounds and 5.5 blocks per game in the two Blazer victories.

Intramural Basketball League

Thursday night at the UAB Recreation Center, two intramural teams found themselves in an evenly heated match. Both undefeated, So Sicca and Team Rec took to the court to take part in the Thursday night competitive intramural basketball game.

Former Blazer great Carldell “Squeaky” Johnson has been trudging through, trying to make his way in the NBA. His most recent team had been the New Orleans Hornets, his hometown, and has played in 15 games this season, averaging 1.8 points, 1.5 assist, .5 steals, and .6 rebounds in just 7.9 minutes a game, up to this point.
On Tuesday, the Hornets cut, one the fan favorites, in order to keep from giving him a guaranteed contract.

UAB to field women’s bowling

UAB has instituted the sport of Women’s Bowling beginning in the 2011-2012 academic year. Bowling has been a sanctioned NCAA sport since 2002 and fields 75 Division I programs.
On June 2, 2011, UAB announced that Michelle Crews would become the school’s inaugural bowling coach. Crews is a former two-time All-American from the University of Central Florida.

As schools across the nation put a pause on education this past winter break, the blazers continued to bring the heat to the court during the holidays. 
First game up was a 68-49 loss to VCU on Tuesday the 20th of December. The Blazers couldn’t generate offense as Ovie Soko and Jordan Swing tied for the team high with 10 points while Cameron Moore added 7 points and 9 boards.

Tennis team in full swing

The UAB tennis team headed to Tallahassee, Florida to start its spring dual match season by splitting a pair of matches between Florida State and Furman.
