Randy Norton to replace Audra Smith

UAB Director of Athletics Brian Mackin announced Monday that Randy Norton will replace former coach Audra Smith as head of the school’s women’s basketball program.
The news came two weeks after Smith decided to leave UAB, where she spent nine years as head coach. She took the same position at Clemson University.

The past week was unkind for the Blazers baseball team. After ending last weekend’s series against Memphis with a walk-off single for a victory over the Tigers, UAB traveled to Tuscaloosa to take on the Crimson Tide.
UAB defeated Alabama 1-0 back on March 26 at the Hoover Met. Tuesday’s game was different as the Crimson Tide was able to wake up their bats by producing 11 hits. Alabama defeated the green and gold 7-4.

On Saturday, both Heather Pearson and Kristen McGrath helped the Blazers secure their third series sweep of the season. They hit a pair of home runs that gave UAB an edge past UTEP 7-2, 5-1 at the UAB softball field.

Barons strengthen outfield

The Barons traveled to Chattanooga following the memorable opening home-stand on the Southside last week. The bats cooled off after Birmingham swept the Mississippi Braves in five games.

The long-awaited opening night and opening weekend came and went for the Birmingham Barons playing baseball on the Southside. The buzz and electricity was felt and seen all weekend and the attendance numbers reflected it as well.

The UAB softball team got off to a slow start this week with a loss on Wednesday in Tuscaloosa against the University of Alabama. The loss caused the Blazer’s record to fall to 24-9.

The UAB Men’s Tennis team squared off in a pair of contests this weekend, dropping the first series to the No. 36 ranked Memphis Tigers before rebounding on Saturday to overcome South Alabama.

The Blazers concluded rivalry week last week by taking on Samford, Jacksonville State, and Memphis.
The week started with a trip to cross-town rival Samford University. The Blazers benefited off a many Samford miscues and errors early. The game settled down for both teams until late in the game.

The UAB baseball team took the weekend off from conference play and entertained Jacksonville State and Savannah State at Young Memorial Field.
Tuesday night, the Blazers defeated in-state foe Jacksonville State—8-2. The game was shortened due to rain and lasted only seven innings.
